Are you expecting a federal refund from the Internal Revenue Service after filing your taxes this season? There’s a quick way to check the status of that return on the IRS website.
The IRS has a “Where’s my Refund” tool online or the free IRS mobile app IRS2Go to make it easy to check when you should expect your refund to show up. Information on your tax refund typically will be available within 24 hours after you filed an electronic return or four weeks after mailing a paper return. The app updates once a day – usually at night. According to the IRS, 90% of refunds are received 21 days or less from the date the return was accepted.

In order to get the status of your refund, you will need your social security number, your filing status (Single, Head of Household, Married Filing Jointly, etc.) and the exact refund amount. The tool will show one of three statuses: Return Received, Refund Apprved or Refund Sent. For security reasons, the IRS suggests you close your browser after you have finished accessing your refund status.
